University Professor Speaks to Students (11/20/2011)
Prof. James A. Mitchell, PhD, from Cal State Northridge, spoke to 8th grade history students. Dr. Mitchell talked about how the ideas in the Declaration of Independence impacts all of us today, and how his education has led him to travel all over the world, including a recent trip to Tanzania in Africa. Dr. Michell attended Audobon Junior High and Crenshaw High in LAUSD, before continuing his education at Vasser College in New York and Princeton University in New Jersey. This was his second lecture to students at SGMS. Thank you, Dr. Mitchell!

Help the Magnet Program by bringing your Lakewood Center, Los Cerritos Center, or Stonewood Center original receipts to the magnet office. The Magnet Program will receive 5 points for each dollar spent. You can also choose to log the receipts yourself by stopping by Guest Services at any of the centers and letting them know you are helping Magnet South Gate Middle School. Remember to tell your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to log their receipts. Anyone can support our school in the School Cents program. Thank you for your help and support!

Yearbook Distribution (6/6/2011)
2011 Yearbooks will be distributed in the foyer of the auditorium during lunch from June 8th through June 17th. Please follow the schedule for your grade-level pickup. Those students who pre-ordered yearbooks before June 1, 2011 will get a RED writstband that entitles them to a free dress day on Tuesday, June 21, 2011.

Pentathlon Teams Win 36 Medals (5/29/2011)
Congratulations to the 2010-11 Pentathlon Teams for their outstanding performance in the Orange County Competition. We took a total of 36 medals in the competition. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams were outstanding. Clarisa P. received a 1st place medal in literature, while Nelson N. recieved 2nd place medals in math and the Super Quiz Written! Gonzalo G. won a total of 5 medals. Way to go South Gate Vikings' Wicked Pentathlon Teams.

The SGMS 2nd Annual Spelling Bee! (5/26/2011)
6th graders participated in this year's Spelling Bee! Contestants went through 5 rounds before the elimination began.The final contestants battled it out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The winners of this year's Spelling Bee Competition were awarded trophies. Arlette M.-1st Place, Gabriel G.-2nd Place, Rosa F.-3rd Place Congratulations to all candidates that participated. INTEL International Science & Engineering Fair (5/13/2011)
6th grade magnet students participated in the ISEF Forensic Challenge at the Los Angeles Convention Center on May 12, 2011. Students read the murder mystery case background, visited the crime scene for clues, examined evidence, and began their work as CSIs to solve the case. Students also had the opportunity to visit the list of finalists in the project hall and exhibitors in the Expo hall to get additional clues about the case. The experience was both exciting and educational for all students!

Vikings Present Technology Projects at Infotech 2011 (5/4/2011)
8th Graders from the TECH! SLC presented at the LAUSD 2011 Infotech at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Saturday, April 30th. Cynthia G., Cesar S., Luz V., and Juan M. demonstrated to parents, administrators, teachers and students attending the convention how to use class blogs for educational projects. This marks the 6th consecutive year that SGMS students have presented technology projects at Infotech.

Mr. Lutz's Art students participated in Disneyland's Youth Education Series "Animation Magic" program, some on April 27th, some on April 28th. The program, through Disney's California Adventure Park, was led and taught by several Disney facilitators. Students discovered and learned about the history, creativity, and innovation of the animation process and how the vision of Walt Disney influenced the history of animation. In the Animation Academy, students had the opportunity to create kineographs, plan and design their own storyboards, and explored their own creativity. They also discussed, observed, and participated in character development, and saw how technology has greatly influenced animation today. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

History Scholar Visits SGMS Classroom (1/22/2011)
Professor James A. Mitchell from California State University, Northridege, spoke to the 8th grade history students from our TECH! SLC on Friday. Dr. Mitchell discussed how the ideas of liberty and equality from the Declaration of Independence related to our students' lives today, and also traced his own education from LAUSD schools in South Los Angeles to college degrees from Vassar College and Princeton, two top rated universities on the east coast.
